Shocking TCS Layoffs? Union Says 30,000 Jobs at Risk—TCS Pushes Back

Chennai, August 20, 2025 — The Union of IT & ITES Employees (UNITE) staged a protest in Chennai this Tuesday, slamming Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for laying off 12,000 mid- and senior-level employees. Protesters carried banners branding top bosses the “Chief of Cruelty” and “Chief of Corporate Greed,” with one message boldly declaring: “Secret to stop layoffs: ‘Unionise.’”

On social media (X, formerly Twitter), UNITE accused the government of turning a blind eye. A union rep, Janani, told The New Indian Express that the real figure might be as high as 30,000 to 40,000 job losses—raising the stakes even further.

TCS hit back quickly, calling the speculations “incorrect and misleading.” The company clarified that the layoffs affect just 2% of its workforce, sticking to its earlier message of approximately 12,000 job cuts.

UNITE didn’t back down. In a fiery statement, the union pointed to TCS’s ₹2.55 lakh crore revenue, 24.3% operating profit margin, and ₹45,588 crore dividend payout, calling the layoffs unjustified. They urged TCS to invest in upskilling employees instead of discarding them.
